Year 2004 - SAARC Awareness Year for TB and HIV/AIDS
Pursuant to the decision of the Twelfth SAARC Summit held in Islamabad from 4 to 6 January 2004 to observe the year 2004 as the "SAARC Awareness Year for TB and HIV/AIDS" the SAARC TB Centre carried out the following activities:

Audio-visual documentary on advocacy on TB and HIV/AIDS:
In observance of SAARC
awareness year for TB and HIV/AIDS, STAC prepared and released an audio-visual documentary on advocacy for TB and HIV/AIDS in the SAARC Member States. The documentary is focused on TB and HIV/AIDS control and prevention.
Awareness programme related to TB and HIV/AIDS control through essay competition focusing the issues of TB and HIV/AIDS and to establish award for winners of the competition:
STAC organized regional level awareness programme related to TB and HIV/AIDS and their prevention through ESSAY COMPETITION among the high school level students on the topic "The Role of School Students in Control and Prevention of TB and HIV/AIDS"in the observance of SAARC Awareness Year for TB and HIV/AIDS. Member States had sent three best essays from the essay competition organized at National level. The award of cash prize including shield, certificate and consolation prizes have been distributed to the following prizewinners:
The First prizewinner was Ms. Tanjeen Laila Jhilik from BAF Shaheen College, Jessore, Bangladesh, second prizewinner was Abhay Raj Shakya from Palpa Awasiya Secondary School, Palpa, Nepal and third prizewinner was Wishma Jeewanali Samaraweera from Visakha Vidyalaya,
Colombo, Sri Lanka. Other 12 students of the different schools received the consolation prizes.
